Masonic Miscellanea

Two interesting Masonic records can be claimed for the Lodge:

The first is the longest known gap between initiation and passing – the 51 years attributed to Harry Scott-Harden.  He was initiated on 22nd October 1896 while serving as a Lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers, was immediately posted overseas and resigned ten years later as he saw little prospect of another posting in the South of England.  After retiring from the Army in the rank of Colonel, he eventually settled in Hampshire and rejoined the Lodge on 23rd May 1947, still as an Entered Apprentice.  He was duly passed the following month and raised in July of the next year.

The second is the most prolific number of ceremonies worked by a Brother in the Chair – the 66 Initiations, 51 Passings and 57 Raisings attributed to Henry Sadler.  He was installed in the Chair of the Aldershot Camp Lodge No. 1331 in 1916, while serving as a Major in the A.S.C.  During his year in office 136 ceremonies were worked – 48 Initiations, 42 Passings and 46 Raisings.  It is not known for certain that he occupied the Chair for every ceremony during his year, as that Lodge’s Minute Books were destroyed by fire during the Second World War.  However, it is unlikely during the conflict that many other Brethren qualified to occupy the Chair would have been present in the Garrison.  Bro. Sadler then joined Aldershot Army and Navy Lodge in 1918, occupied the Chair on several occasions, due to problems posed by the War and carried out nine Initiations, four Passings and seven Raisings.  In 1919 he was installed as Deputy Master and carried out a further nine Initiations, five Passings and four Raisings.  In total he conferred 38 Degrees on members of the Lodge, which is probably a record in itself (the nearest challenger is W.Bro. Brig. Surg. A.S. Knight Prescott A.M.D., who in 1886/87 conferred 28 Degrees).  However, if Sadler was responsible for all the degrees conferred when he was in the Chair of Aldershot Camp Lodge his grand total would be 174 Degrees!
